Acne / Hydrocolloid Patches

How do these patches work?

  • These are small, adhesive patches that absorb pus and oil from  acne blemishes.
  • Provide a healing, moist environment.
  • Protect the area from bacterial contamination by lowering the pH levels thereby creating an acidic environment.
  • Deliver active ingredients such as salicylic acid or tea tree oil, both of which are very effective in acne treatment.

How to use?

  1. Cleanse your face and gently pat your face with a facial tissue / face towel.
  2. Apply the patch onto the zit.
  3. Leave it overnight.
  4. Remove the patch slowly and repeat the process if needed.

These patches claim that it could be used every day and that make up could cover up its appearance. Well, I don’t really agree with that, it shows up on your face pretty clearly that you have a sticker on. Hence, I would suggest using it overnight.

In-depth details on how they work?

The internal layer of the patch contains molecules of cardoxymethycellulose suspended in gelatin, which acts as a delivery system to carry the active ingredients to the acne/zit. This suspension is referred to as a hydrocolloid. This suspension then acts on the pus produced by the zit and absorbs it.

This one is from a Korean brand “COSRX”. The packet contains 24 patches with 3 different sizes. These patches are packed into a sachet with a seal. The seal lock packaging makes it easier to use and store it. This also helps in avoiding any sort of bacterial contamination, moisture and dust.

    1. Hey there, thank you for the like first off. I do wanna point out about acne washes I’ve used. I found a stark contrast between Biore Acne Wash with Charcoal and Neutrogena All In One Acne Wash. I was extremely disappointed in Biore with their own charcoal take, it left my forehead very greasy, and my 2 pimples got worse. But when I went back to using my Neutrogena, it went right to work immediately drying up my t-zone, and shrinking my pimples after each wash.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve used Charcoal before, but it was more finer and sophisticated product that was a mix of Charcoal and black sugar. It clean and exfoliated my face very well, I discovered it at an AirBnB I was staying at.

Neutrogena does the job, and Charcoal only good if done right, Charcoal can’t just be penciled in with a standard acne formula like Biore attempted to do.

  2. I never knew that there are these hydrocolloid patches for acne, what I only know about is the ointments and the pore refining toners for preventing acne. Thanks for sharing this valuable information and also for the thoughtful step-by-step guide for enlightening us on how to properly use these products.
